Joseph's nickname was "Whig". He, his wife, and his first 3 children lived in Grainger County, Tennessee, according to the TN 1870 Census. He was a farmer and Mollie, his wife, kept house. In the Tennessee 1880 Census, Joseph and his family had moved to Moore County, Tennessee. The census showed that his brother, Jacob, and Jacob's family also lived in Moore County.
According to James Hood Churchman, during the 1880's Whig and his family moved to Arkansas and settled in Calamine, Izard County. Later some of the family moved to Jackson County, Newport, and Tuckerman.
According to Joe Churchman, son of James Hood Churchman, Whig was hunting raccoons one night and fell out of a tree. The fall killed him.
